I joined a group a while back called the Freelancers Union based in New York, NY. While I mainly joined for marketing benefits (you get a free business listing when you sign up). What I found though is a well organinzed resource for everything freelance. The group is dedicated to freelancers’ rights regarding fair employment, payment guarantees and taxation.
Other resources include tax preparation tips, a client scorecard where you can warn others about those crazy-assed clients that made your life hell and my favorite – the contract creator. New York residents can enjoy access to more affordable medical insurance, while freelancers nationwide can access life, dental and disability insurance.
Membership is free and definately worth it. My listing has already generated some work for me.

More fonts. And now – fonts as art. And not just art – portraits. Sort of like that famous giant image made of fingerprints.

Believe it. Font week month continues. Today’s submission is “So you need a typeface?”
I find it both clever and visually pleasing. Do enjoy.
When is a color just a color?
Never. Not when a designer or, it turns out, a painter is involved. See the handy, fun-looking chart below for color meanings, feelings evoked by color and how to choose colors to get your message/feeling across.

Time to blog about fonts again. I am changing this to “Font Month” instead of “Font Week” since I got really busy and only blogged once. So today’s font news is something I found on Pinterest from a friend’s list. It is a site that allows you to create your own font from your handwriting. Download a template and follow their directions about using the template properly and $9.95 later you have your own custom font. Find it here.
As far as uses… Imagine typing everything and not having to write long notes, Christmas cards, labels, etc. My 12 year old loved the idea of typing all of her schoolwork (I’ll just have to help her space it our properly so it’s not totally obvious). And now I am off to practice my penmanship!
